There are two things that go hand-in-hand for someone like me. First is University of West Georgia basketball and second is the holiday season.
You might think that sounds a little crazy, but for someone who has been a part of this university for the last 12 holiday seasons, it is hard to think of one without thinking of the other. From late November until the first of the year, my holiday season is a hectic mix of UWG basketball, holiday gatherings and the holidays themselves. Read more ...
I’ve said it before in this column, but there is nothing like Gameday at University Stadium .. or The Coliseum, or Cole Field or any of our venues here on campus at the University of West Georgia. But one of my greatest joys in the position I hold is to take a road trip.
There’s something about getting up early on the day of the game, getting in the car and heading down the highway to Valdosta, Pensacola, Florence or Memphis. Usually, you get to travel with friends and coworkers, enjoy the conversation, maybe a little embarrassing singing and all the while, you are headed to watch YOUR school wear a uniform that you aren’t used to seeing. On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, the John DeVore Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Dennis and Sally Williams to support student athletes at University of West Georgia. The scholarship, established in memory of baseball star and legend John DeVore, will award $500 annually to a student on the intercollegiate baseball team at UWG.
“He was a great role model for me,” says Sally Williams, John’s sister-in-law. “We knew that Johnny couldn’t have come to college had he not been such a great baseball player and had he not had some financial help along the way. There are a lot of students who are very good students but just need a little extra, whether it’s for books, or meals, or whatever. We wanted to do this to keep Johnny’s memory alive to help others.” Read more ...

This year, for the second time ever and the first time under head coach Michael Cooney, UWG will take part in this time-honored tradition of beginning at midnight. Read more ...

There is a phenomenon in the world of athletics that is very real, the phenomenon known as the “home field advantage.” Here at the University of West Georgia, we have a home field advantage that is better than most in Division II. And I’m not just saying that to make you feel good, it’s the truth.
If you don’t believe me, take a look at the GSC-TV Game of the Week each week. When University Stadium is the venue for that game, we routinely have louder and more active crowds than the majority of the schools that host the weekly televised event. Read more ...

On Saturday, September 14, the University of West Georgia football team will take on Miles College in the 2013 home opener, marking the beginning of the fifth year of operation at University Stadium, the premier venue for Division II collegiate football in the southeast.
And I have been lucky enough to have a front row seat to every moment. More than 6,000 fans were in attendance on September 5, 2009, as the Wolves took on Lambuth in the first game in University Stadium. I remember it as if it were yesterday. I still have the picture that I took from the sidewalk near the scoreboard in the north end of the stadium, just as Adi Brkic was putting his foot into the first kickoff at the venue. Read more ...

The summer has started off with a bang for the ace of the 2013 UWG pitching staff, as Jamie Sexton led his summer ball team, the Winchester Royals of the Valley Baseball League in Virginia, to a victory on opening night last Friday. But that was the tip of the iceberg, as he was named Honorable Mention All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Jamie’s numbers were among the best in school history during the 2013 season, as he produced a sub-2.00 ERA and a 10-4 season in his sophomore campaign.
