The winningest coach in Gulf South Conference men’s basketball history has received the league’s highest honor. Former UWG coach Ed Murphy was recently named as part of the Gulf South Conference Hall of Fame Class of 2015.
The newest Hall of Fame class was announced on Thursday, May 14, by the league office in Birmingham. The group includes three former coach/administrators and two volleyball players. Induction ceremonies are set for June 24 during the conference’s annual summer meetings at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort at Miramar Beach, Florida. Read more ...
Stephanie Bennett closed out the UWG women's golf season on Tuesday, May 5, in Savannah with a solid finish to the 2015 NCAA South Regional, as the junior shot at 2-over par 74 in the third and final round of the tournament, moving up five spots on the final day and finishing in a tie for 10th place at this year's event.
Bennett finished the tournament with a three-round score of 224 at the Savannah Quarters Golf Club in Pooler, Georgia, posting an 8-over par tournament. She was four strokes away from the playoff that determined the individual players advancing to the NCAA National tournament next weekend. The unquestioned driving force behind the West Georgia Wolves' run to the NCAA Regionals in 2015 is headed to professional basketball. UWG coach Michael Cooney announced last week that Deonta Stocks had declared for the 2015 National Basketball Association Draft. Stocks submitted his official notification letter to the NBA prior to the April 26 deadline.
"While I am sad to see Deonta go, I am very grateful that I have had the best seat in the house to watch him play, compete, and grow," said Coach Cooney. "He made play after play on both ends of the court. He brought great joy to everyone including our team our students and our fans, and he grew into being an outstanding player and teammate." The past week has been a banner week for the University of West Georgia athletic department in regards to the professional ranks, and that great week continued Sunday as senior All-American wide receiver and punt returner Denarius Appling signed a contract with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.
The signing marks the third for a West Georgia athlete in the past two days, as Appling's teammates Tory Slater and Tyrell Adams were signed by the Seattle Seahawks shortly after the NFL draft ended on Saturday. Read more ...
Nicole Fasick didn’t think she wanted to come to the University of West Georgia when she was growing up, but when she graduated from Douglasville’s Alexander High School, it just seemed like the perfect fit. Now, four years later, she’s due to graduate in the spring 2015 ceremony with a nursing degree. Nothing unusual in that, until one looks at everything else she has done in the last four years.

West Georgia’s successful 2014-15 basketball season continues to reap honors for sophomore guard Deonta Stocks, and on March 30, head coach Michael Cooney joined in the postseason accolades, as the pair were given the top honors bestowed by the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association.
Deonta, a native of Lithonia, Georgia, was named Monday as Georgia NCAA Division II Player of the Year by Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (GABCA). The group also selected Deonta as a first team member of the GABCA Division II All-State Team. Read more ...
For the second time this year, a West Georgia team sat waiting on a Sunday evening to see where they would end up in the NCAA Tournament. Wolves' basketball received the bid and will be the fourth seed in this year's NCAA South Regional, taking on fifth-seeded West Alabama in a rematch of the Gulf South Conference tournament semifinals. The tournament is scheduled for March 14-17, but exact game times for Saturday have not been released yet.
The trip is the 15th in the history of the UWG program and the third since the magical run to the Elite Eight in the 2002 NCAA Championships. That year, the then-Braves reached the round of eight, playing in Evansville, Indiana before falling to Shaw in that round. Read more ...

The 2014-15 athletic year has been one of outstanding accomplishment for the UWG Athletic Department, and the basketball program has had its share of success this year. The West Georgia men's basketball team secured a host spot on Super Tuesday on Saturday, February 21 at The Complex in Valdosta, taking down the Valdosta State Blazers by a narrow 85-83 margin in Gulf South Conference basketball action. The Wolves will play at home on Tuesday, March 3, with the opponent yet to be determined.
The Wolves have now won two straight on the road, taking down West Florida on Thursday and the Blazers on Saturday, and with the win coupled with a loss from Union at Alabama Huntsville, West Georgia can now finish no worse than fourth in the conference. It almost didn't seem as though it was the rubber game of the series, as the day belonged to pitcher Jamie Sexton and West Georgia as the Wolves shut out Montevallo for the second time in two games on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Cole Field.
Sexton pitched brilliantly on the day and looked like the All-American from 2013, going eight innings and allowing no runs on two hits. The highlight of the game came in the fifth inning as Sexton broke the UWG strikeout record with his 214th strikeout of his great career. Read more ...

UWG Head Football Coach Will Hall was featured on CNN on Monday afternoon to discuss his relationship with Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler. Coach Hall recruited and coached Malcolm while he was at the University of West Alabama.

The first look at the 2015 version of the West Georgia baseball team was a good one, as the Wolves opened the year on Saturday afternoon at Cole Field with a pair of victories, dispatching the Paine Lions 15-3 in the opening game followed by an 11-1 victory over the Lions in the nightcap.
Game 1 Recap - UWG 15, Paine 3: The West Georgia lineup pounded out 16 hits and the pitching staff allowed just five en route to a 15-3 shellacking in the opener. Head coach Skip Fite gave the ball to Matthew Norton as the opening game starter, and the junior did not disappoint in his first outing. It's been nearly a month since the West Georgia men's basketball team had a chance to show their skills in front of a home audience, and the Wolves took full advantage of their return home Saturday afternoon, upending rival Valdosta State by a 93-89 score in Gulf South Conference action.
How it Happened: West Georgia led from wire-to-wire, opening up with a 5-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest, but by the time a fourth minute had gone by, VSU was right back in the mix with four-straight points. That would be as close as the Blazers would come in the entire game, as a bucket from Deontre Brown sparked a 13-5 run from the Wolves put UWG up 17-9 with 11:41 left in the first half. Read more ...
