2013 A Day Campaign is a Success

2013 A Day Campaign is a SuccessA Day 2013 has come and gone, but not before successfully raising much needed funds for scholarships at UWG. The annual fund drive kicked off on August 15 at the home of Drs. Kyle and Jane Marrero. Throughout the months of September and October, several other events celebrating the annual fund were held.

The actual date for A Day started off with the annual tradition of breakfast for the volunteers. Afterward, the volunteers fanned out into the community armed with red and blue balloons to solicit donations from local businesses. The day ended with the traditional Victory Celebration held on the third floor suite area at University Stadium. Read more ...

The COAH Patron’s Program: a Great Way to Give Back

Legacy GiftsMost of you know of the great work done in the College of Arts and Humanities. Maybe you have seen a student-run theatre performance at the Townsend Center or taken in a concert in the wonderful Kathy Cashen Recital Hall. (I was there just last night for the Wright Scholars Concert, and you have not lived until you have heard Bach played masterfully on marimba.) Perhaps you have attended one of the fantastic juried art shows, where the best of student art across campus is not only displayed but also for sale? (The 2014 show, by the way, is opening March 5, at 6 p.m., in the Bobick Gallery.) And maybe you have picked up a copy of our Eclectic art and literary magazine, winner of the prestigious Director’s Prize from the Associated Writing Programs (the most prestigious award of its kind in the nation), which features the best of student art, poetry, essays, fiction, music, film and much more. Donor's Gift Supports Studying Abroad

UWG Donors Meet Scholarship Recipients at President’s Luncheon The inaugural Budapest study abroad program for upper level nursing students spent three weeks at Semmelweis University in May 2012. Budapest, the capital of Hungary located along the Danube River, maintains a quaint old world charm with its traditional food, centuries old architecture and welcoming hospitality. Cited as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, it is also one of the largest in the European Union.

Semmelweis University, the oldest medical school in Hungary, is world renown for revolutionizing obstetric care. The course of study offered twelve junior and senior nursing students an experiential immersion in nursing practice in Hungary. Read more ...

Legacy Gifts

Legacy GiftsI have only been employed at UWG for 9 months, but I am constantly amazed by the passion our alumni have for their alma mater. During my short time on campus, many members of our McIntosh Circle have shared reflections of their time on campus and why they have chosen to give back to the university. One of my favorite stories came from Walter Jones, Class of 66.

“In the spring of 1963, after several sears out of school, I applied late to West Georgia. The Admissions Office waived the deadline and opened the door for me, and that initial personal encouragement and support came to characterize my experience at UWG. Read more ...

UWG Donors Meet Scholarship Recipients at President’s Luncheon

UWG Donors Meet Scholarship Recipients at President’s Luncheon UWG President Dr. Kyle Marrero recently met with scholarship donors and recipients at his first Presidential Luncheon. The luncheon provided an opportunity for UWG donors to meet the students who were being impacted by their gifts. Dr. Marrero began his speech sharing that 60 percent of UWG students do not have enough money to attend UWG and require financial aid and scholarships.

“Greenway has hired over 350 of our students and 35 percent of their employee base are UWG graduates,” says Dr. Marrero. “At Southwire and SMI the percentage is also high. What is more astounding is when I asked how they are doing, they shared that in the history of hiring UWG students they never had to fire one because of their inability to do the job. You here today have made that happen!” Read more ...

A Day Changes Lives

A Day Changes LivesUWG changed my life’s trajectory, placing me on a path to personal and career success. As a first-generation college student from a rural community, the caring and inspiring UWG family saw in me what I did not see in myself and helped me to find doors where I once saw walls.

The A Day Campaign is an essential tool used to generate support and funding for scholarships and programming that make a difference in the lives of students today, tomorrow and forever. I know, because I was one of those students. Read more ...

Jeanette Bernhardt Reflection Room Established

Jeanette Bernhardt Reflection Room EstablishedThere’s a concept that states a person must first learn how to care for oneself before he or she can effectively care for others. The School of Nursing at the University of West Georgia has followed this principle for years. Thanks to a gift from Jeanette and W. Fred Bernhardt, students and faculty now have a place to spend time in quiet contemplation of that philosophy in the new reflection room located in the newly constructed School of Nursing building.

Dr. Jeanette Bernhardt, for whom a new reflection room is named, served as the chair of the Department of Nursing from 1978 to 1999. Her leadership took the department from a small associate of science in nursing program to a bachelor degree program for students in Carrollton and two off-campus locations. It was established as a school in September 2008. Read more ...

Donors Help Students Reach Full Potential

Donors Help Students Reach Full PotentialI had the pleasure of participating in the annual President’s Luncheon as a student speaker. I was honored to have been given the opportunity to speak to the financial donors who help fund the scholarships awarded to West Georgia students.

As a first generation college student with an economically disadvantaged background, I don’t know if attending college would even be a possibility without the support of so many generous individuals.

While in high school, I was able to earn 29 college credits before my graduation by participating in a dual enrollment program at Clayton State University. Read more ...

Go West for A Day Begins at UWG

Go West for A DayIt was 31 years ago that UWG alumna Donna Armstrong Lackey was first attracted to the University of West Georgia as a student. Today, Donna maintains that affinity for UWG while serving as the community chair of Go West for A Day, UWG’s annual scholarship campaign.

“I was drawn here by a young, but top notch master’s program in public administration, and the opportunity for financial support as a graduate assistant in the department of political science, made the decision even easier,” she says. Read more ...

Beyond the Classroom

Beyond the ClassroomFor many years, I have talked to potential donors about funding study abroad programs and have written numerous proposals for study abroad scholarships. An important component of these communications has been the life-changing impact that study abroad has on a student.

This summer, my husband and I were fortunate to experience a trip to Europe that we had been planning (and saving for) for many years. Having never before traveled outside of the U.S. and Caribbean, we were extremely excited about this vacation to say the least. Little did I know that it would be life-changing for us.
