For many years, I have talked to potential donors about funding study abroad programs and have written numerous proposals for study abroad scholarships. An important component of these communications has been the life-changing impact that study abroad has on a student. In fact, I researched the topic and wrote a Perspective article in 2009 that included the following important points that show the value of international study:
This summer, my husband and I were fortunate to experience a trip to Europe that we had been planning (and saving for) for many years. Having never before traveled outside of the U.S. and Caribbean, we were extremely excited about this vacation to say the least. Little did I know that it would be life-changing for us. Visiting six countries in 12 days, walking the walls of medieval cities, exploring the ruins of ancient cultures, getting lost in large cities and seeking help from people that could not understand our “southern” English, exploring local cuisines and hearing opinions on Americans from gondoliers, waitresses, shop owners and fellow tourists from all over the world has truly broadened our minds and provided a greater understanding of how others live, work and communicate. This experience has transformed the head knowledge that I gained from research and study to heart knowledge that can only come from experience.
UWG has award winning international study programs across our Colleges and Departments. Many students are unable to take advantage of this important opportunity because the financial cost is prohibitive. A gift of $2500 would enable a student to fulfill their dream of international study and reap the lifetime benefits from this experience. Donations to study abroad programs will be partially or fully matched by UWG’s International Services and Programs Department. If you would like to talk more about ways to provide this life-changing gift to a student, please contact me at dhomesley@westga.edu.
