Earlier this fall, the University of West Georgia held its first Scholarship Gala in the Campus Center Ballroom. The gala began with a champagne salute and dinner followed by cocktails, music, and dancing on the Campus Center patio. The Scholarship Gala raised a total of $55,000 for need-based scholarships.
Sustaining and enhancing a desired position as the institution of choice in West Georgia and the region requires the university to remain competitive in recruiting future generations of student scholars. Mr. Dewey Everette Teal ‘51 and Dr. Ramona Pierce Teal ‘66 ‘73 ‘84 generously contributed to the University of West Georgia in memory of the life and legacy of Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Teal. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduate of Mt. Zion High School and is renewable as long as a 2.5 GPA is maintained.
L.E. Teal was born in Heard County, Georgia in 1896, and his wife Jimmie Lee Windom Teal was born in Mt. Zion Georgia in 1903. Beginning in the late 1930s, they lived and farmed in the Mt. Zion community, cultivating not only the land, but also their children’s future. Read more ...
Dr. Kyle Marrero hosted his annual President’s Luncheon on October 30 at the Z6 Dining Hall on campus. The room was filled with generous donors and leaders from the community and was a showcase of how effective donations are.
University of West Georgia Professor Kim Holder shared her heartwarming story. Because of charitable contributions her dreams of a college career came true. Kim began her life as an abandoned infant in Korea.
“I lived in Korea for the first 10 months of my life, and I was shuffled through the social service systems and various orphanages and foster homes,” said Kim. Read more ...
The University of West Georgia celebrated its 2014 A Day recently, closing out the day with the annual Victory Celebration on the front lawn of the Alumni House. A grand total of $456,724 has been raised since July 1, 2014.
“We’re very happy with the results of this year’s A Day campaign,” said Dr. Kyle Marrero, university president. “We are well on our way to meeting our annual fund goals. UWG is proud to announce the establishment of the Judith A. Lingrell O’Harra Student Emergency Fund. Dr. Scot Lingrell, the vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and his wife, Karen Lingrell, assistant director of collaborative programs, established the gift for the purpose of creating an emergency fund for students in need.
“We decided to establish the fund because we know, from personal experience, that students find themselves in critical need at times, and we need to have some money available so we can help meet those needs so that students are not distracted from their education when difficult life situations happen,” explained Dr. Lingrell. UWG’s annual day of giving will take place on Thursday, October 16. Although donor campaign events have been taking place for the last several weeks, Thursday is the culmination of the years’ donations and pledges.
Volunteers will arrive on campus for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and then fan out into the community to collect donations from local businesses. They will recognize those businesses and those who have already given by tying red and blue balloons on their doors and mailboxes. Read more ...
Bob and Millie Coggin recently made a donation to the University of West Georgia Foundation to provide financial support for UWG Newnan. The contribution will be used to fund facility enhancements. In recognition of their donation, Bob and Millie will receive the naming of the Shell-Coggin Tutor-Writing Center.
“I am very convinced that converting this hospital to a West Georgia facility will have a very favorable economic impact on Newnan and will certainly contribute to enhancing the progressive image Newnan and Coweta County enjoy today,” said Bob, who is a member of the Newnan City Council. Student success stories were shared with A DAY leadership members at the recent A DAY Leadership kickoff event. A DAY is UWG’s annual scholarship campaign. Drs. Kyle and Jane Marrero opened up their home for the event, which highlighted the ever-growing need for scholarship opportunities at the University of West Georgia.
A DAY co-chairs Artagus Newell and April Brewer spoke eloquently of the need, highlighting their own experiences at UWG. As the owner of the Squire Shop, a successful Carrollton men’s clothing store, April credits UWG for her success. “Today I am living the American dream. I own my own business and a clothing line. University of West Georgia freshman Hannah Walker has been awarded the Hubert G. and Naomi C. Holland Scholarship Endowment for the 2014-2015 academic year. The scholarship will cover all of Hannah’s educational expenses for four years, along with five other Paulding County residents, provided the GPAs remain above 2.5.
Hannah, nursing major and scholarship recipient says, “I am so thankful to have been chosen as a recipient for the Holland Scholarship. I got the opportunity to attend a homecoming service in honor of Mr. Hubert Holland and met his wife, Naomi.” Read more ...
