Nurses are the largest group of healthcare providers. As such, they must use their voices to provide input on health care policies at the local and federal level.

U.S. News & World Report recently released its 2016 rankings for online graduate nursing programs. While it comes as no surprise that the University of West Georgia’s nursing program ranked well, it should be noted that they ranked higher than last year.
UWG’s Tanner Health System School of Nursing’s online graduate program was ranked this year at 31, after being ranked at 41 in 2015. Over 1200 programs that are offered mostly or entirely online at regionally accredited institutions are evaluated for the rankings. Read more ...
Phyllis and Jim Rogers of Newnan recently honored the University of West Georgia with the endowment of a scholarship for a UWG Newnan student as well as a monetary gift for the purchase of educational nursing equipment at the Coweta campus.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to a UWG Newnan nursing student who has a 2.5 GPA or higher and demonstrates unmet financial need. The endowment will be known as the Phyllis and Jim Rogers Nursing Scholarship Fund. Phyllis Rogers, who worked in the former Newnan Hospital (now housing UWG Newnan) as a registered nurse, said she knows how difficult it can be to obtain an education. Read more ...

HRSA awarded a $300,000 Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) grant to the Tanner Health System School of Nursing to be used in the 2015-16 school year. The purpose of the NFLP is to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty for the education of nurses needed to address the nursing workforce shortage. Read more ...
After earning her BSN in 2000 and then her MSN in 2003 from the University of West Georgia, Dr. Jan Keys proceeded into what has become a stellar career, serving in various nurse leadership roles in both Georgia and Tennessee.
Most recently, Dr. Keys was awarded the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Senior Level Healthcare Executive Regent’s Award from the Tennessee Hospital Association. ACHE is an international professional society of 40,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems, and other healthcare organizations.
The award recognizes members who are experienced in the field and who have made contributions to the advancement of healthcare management. The University of West Georgia is proud to announce the establishment of two endowed scholarships from the estate of Hugh L. and Doris H. Brock. The Hugh L. Brock, Jr. and the Doris Hollingsworth Brock Scholarship for Education and the Hugh L. Brock, Jr. and Doris Hollingsworth Brock Scholarship for Nursing Education will be awarded annually to UWG students in the College of Education and the Tanner Health System School of Nursing.
Hugh and Doris Brock have been generous lifelong supporters of UWG and the surrounding community for generations. Hugh was a retired farmer who selflessly dedicated his time to the Tanner Hospital Board of Trustees, serving as the chair for one term. In an effort to increase cultural awareness as well as their nursing skills, two students and an assistant professor from the Tanner Health System School of Nursing recently studied abroad in Budapest, Hungary.
Dr. Rita Mahmoud, Donata Giamboy, and Chelsea Mobley spent most of the month of May in Budapest.
“I didn’t know much about the culture before this study abroad experience, but we were exposed to different people, language, and ways of living and traveling,” said Chelsea, who was a little uncertain about how easily she would adapt to the culture. Read more ...

History will be made at the University of West Georgia’s summer graduation ceremony on July 25. The Tanner Health System School of Nursing will see its first graduate earning a Doctor of Education in nursing education walk across the stage.
The Ed.D. in nursing education online program admitted its first cohort of students in the fall of 2012. Now, after 60 semester hours and 12 dissertation credit hours, Jaime Carter will be the first student to whom UWG will award an Ed.D. in nursing education. Read more ...
Nurse educators from around the world will descend upon Atlanta June 10 -13 for the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Conference. The INACSL Conference is the leading forum for nurse educators, managers, and researchers to connect in person with their community of practice for simulation; and UWG’s Tanner Health System School of Nursing will serve as a host school for the conference.
INACSL promotes research and disseminates evidence-based practice standards for clinical simulation methods and learning environments. Last year, the INACSL conference was attended by representatives from 49 states and 16 countries. Read more ...
Two faculty members in the Tanner Health System School of Nursing have received a DAISY Award from the DAISY Foundation based in California. Tena Barnes Carraher, one of the co-founders of the foundation, presented the awards to UWG recipients Lourdes Cody and Dr. Michelle Byrne.
After Tena's husband, Patrick, passed away in 1999 from complications from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP), Tena and family members looked for a way to remember him.

Nicole Fasick didn’t think she wanted to come to the University of West Georgia when she was growing up, but when she graduated from Douglasville’s Alexander High School, it just seemed like the perfect fit. Now, four years later, she’s due to graduate in the spring 2015 ceremony with a nursing degree. Nothing unusual in that, until one looks at everything else she has done in the last four years.
Nicole is also a graduating member of the Wolves women’s basketball team. The 2014-15 season was the best since Scott Groninger became the Wolves coach in 2010. The team ended the season at 19-11, with the team scoring the most wins in a season since 2008-09. Read more ...

The Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare recently chose the University of West Georgia to participate in the Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholars Program for two years with a $20,000 grant to support two Ed.D. Jonas nurse leader scholars.
The Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar Program was created in 2008 to support educational development of new nursing faculty. The grants, made through institutional awards, also prepare doctoral candidates to help students address the needs of future patients. Additionally, the Jonas Center grant is a part of a national effort to stem the faculty shortage and prepare future nurses as America’s healthcare system continues to evolve. Read more ...

The University of West Georgia Tanner Health System School of Nursing recently received approval from the University System of Georgia Board of Regents for full funding of the Nursing Faculty Initiative Recruitment and Retention Grant. The funding is for $299,878 over the next year.
The first goal of the grant is to improve faculty retention and recruitment efforts of the Tanner Health System School of Nursing. The school is proposing to do this through providing a Center for Nursing Scholarship, leadership development training, dissertation consultation for faculty, seed money for faculty research and creating clinical and student support positions to relieve faculty workload. The Tanner Health System School of Nursing at the University of West Georgia recently announced Dr. Jenny Schuessler as the new dean. This announcement follows the almost 30-year career and retirement of current dean, Dr. Kathryn Grams.
“The students, faculty, staff and I are delighted with the appointment of Dr. Schuessler,” says Dr. Grams. “She is the right person to lead the school to the next level and we look forward to her arrival.”

Robert South once said “if there be any truer measure of a man than by what he does, it must be by what he gives.” If that is the case, Dr. Kathryn Grams, the retiring dean of the Tanner Health System School of Nursing at the University of West Georgia, satisfies both conditions completely. The lobby of the nursing school was packed with colleagues and well-wishers as they gathered for a reception honoring Dr. Grams on Monday, April 14, 2014.
The event began at 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long reception. Guests mingled and congratulated Dr. Grams while enjoying refreshments. The presentation segment of the event opened with a performance of two songs written in honor of Dr. Grams by Chordially Yours, an acapella trio made up of UWG alumnae, Cathy Wright, Carol Glover and Merry Todd. The Tanner Health System School of Nursing at the University of West Georgia held a labyrinth walk for UWG staff, faculty and students on April 11 and for the community on April 12. The outdoor labyrinth, located at the Nursing Building, is made of multi-colored pavers and is an ancient tool used to create an overall sense of well-being and balance.
The event allowed participants to walk the beautiful labyrinth, ask questions and experience first-hand the benefits that the exercise provides. There was also a workshop for making a small, personal, cloth finger labyrinth to take home. Read more ...
On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, the University of West Georgia hosted a dedication ceremony honoring the official partnership and naming of the Tanner Health System School of Nursing. The event included representatives from Tanner Health System and UWG, community members, UWG nursing alumni and current UWG nursing professors and students. Following the ceremony, a reception was provided for guests including tours of the new nursing building.

The University of West Georgia has received the 2013 University System of Georgia Innovation Award for Design and Technology. This is the first year UWG has received the award, which was presented at the USG Annual Facilities Officers Conference by USG Chancellor Hank Huckaby.
UWG’s award was due to its newly built 64,000-square-foot School of Nursing building. The three-story structure features problem-based and technology-enhanced classrooms that support innovative pedagogies. The advanced facilities also encourage teamwork for 21st century nursing practice and support the profession’s higher purpose of caring. Read more ...
University of West Georgia’s School of Nursing held its open house for faculty, staff and students to visit the completed $16.5 million state-of-the-art nursing building. Many visitors stopped by the new School of Nursing for an in-depth tour of the 64,000-square-foot building, which features high-fidelity simulation suites and technologically advanced classrooms.
The open house allowed visitors to engage in the art skills and simulation labs on the second floor of the building. They were also able to engage in the simulation lab with mannequins by checking their pulses, auscultating their breath sounds and observing their reactions, such as seizures and perspiration. The facilities allow professors to record the aspiring nurses through an observation screen as the students work with their mannequin ‘patients.’ Read more ...

The School of Nursing, chosen for bringing world class nursing education directly to students’ screens, was the only Georgia school to make the list.

Although Holocaust Survivor Eva Kor’s lecture was not scheduled to begin until 6 p.m. on Friday, September 20, students, faculty and members of the community crowded into the Townsend Center an hour early. The event, “The Triumph of the Human Spirit: from Auschwitz to Forgiveness,” was sponsored by the School of Nursing, Pi Nu Honor Society and the College of Arts and Humanities. As the masses flooded into the auditorium at 5:30 p.m., those without tickets waited in the lobby to learn whether there would be room for them to attend. After the lecture, members of the audience were invited to ask questions. When Eva finished answering their queries, she had her picture taken with students from a local junior high school and then signed copies of her book, “Surviving the Angel of Death: The True Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz.” Read more ...
UWG School of Nursing Receives $503,020 to Address Nursing Faculty Shortage: The School of Nursing will be able to educate more nurses for faculty roles in colleges and universities thanks to a $503,020 award through the University System of Georgia’s Nursing Faculty Initiative which is funded for two years.
The award will support the expansion of the School of Nursing’s wholly online new doctoral program—an Ed.D. degree in Nursing Education, increasing the number of students able to enroll by nearly 50 percent this first year. The Nursing Education Program is the only program of its type in Georgia and one of a few in the nation designed specifically to prepare nursing faculty. Read more ...
UWG welcomes Dr. Michelle Byrne as a new professor of nursing. Dr. Byrne joins the university after directing the Master of Science in Nursing Education Program at University of North Georgia. Dr. Byrne says the new Ed.D. in Nursing Education provided a major incentive for her transfer.

The University of West Georgia welcomes Holocaust Survivor Eva Kor for a speaking event on Friday, September 20, at 6 p.m. in the Townsend Center. Eva, a survivor of Mengele’s twin experiments during the Holocaust, will be speaking on “The Triumph of the Human Spirit: from Auschwitz to Forgiveness.” This free event is open to the public and is sponsored by the School of Nursing, Pi Nu Honor Society and the College of Arts and Humanities.
Eva was only 10 years old when her entire family was placed in a concentration camp. She and her twin sister Miriam were separated from the rest of their family, and the two girls barely survived the torturous experiments Josef Mengele performed on them. Read more ...
