The University of West Georgia debate team wrapped up the first half of their season compiling an 8-0 record during the preliminary rounds at the 2013 Franklin R. Shirley Classic, hosted by Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
With more than 150 teams competing at the largest tournament of the semester, the UWG varsity team of Chicago natives, sophomore Hakeem Muhammad and junior Marquis Ard, remained undefeated for eight rounds, beating the top two teams in the nation, Northwest University and Georgetown University. The University of West Georgia has two new partners in China, a development that gives the university the ability to expand international operations in several new academic areas. On a two-week visit that started in the Three Gorges region in central China and finished in the northern lake area of Hebei province, UWG representatives met with faculty, administrators and students to forge institutional relationships and establish the basis for academic cooperation.
Led by Dr. Maria Doyle of the International Services and Programs Office, the UWG team formalized relationships with Southwest University in the Beibei district of Chongqing and Hengshui University in Hengshui. Read more ...
Brittany Groves, a UWG Advanced Academy scholar, won the prestigious National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship this summer to study abroad in Korea. Groves, a Decatur, Georgia high school student, was one of only 625 students chosen by the U.S. State Department for the all-expenses paid scholarship which allowed her to study Korean first-hand in South Korea.
The NSLI-Y program is an annual merit-based scholarship that allows deserving high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in the native country where the language is spoken. The awardees experience a full immersion for the duration of their stay. Read more ...
Austin Richardson, rising senior of UWG’s Advanced Academy of Georgia, spent nearly 40 days this summer performing astrophysics research in Santa Barbara, California at the Summer Science Program at Westmont College. During this time, Austin operated a telescope to take images of a near-earth asteroid, and wrote his own computer software to measure its position precisely and calculate its orbit around the sun.

Holding true to its national trend, the UWG Debate Team finished second place at this year’s Cross-Examination Debate Association Nationals. The team of Damiyr Davis and Miguel Feliciano, both sophomores from New York City, topped off its season with a more than stellar performance in two national tournaments.
The CEDA competition, held at Idaho State University, kicked off the first leg of nationals with 66 schools and 144 teams competing. A close call, Damiyr and Miguel lost after a 5-4 decision in the final round. The team compiled a 7-1 record in preliminary rounds and entered the elimination rounds as the second seed. The win did not come easy; UWG defeated opponents from UT-Austin, Kansas University, Wake Forest and Pittsburg, among others. Read more ...
Advanced Academy student Sarah Saltiel has been selected to receive the Award for Aspirations in Computing by the National Center for Women in Information Technology. The NCWIT’s Award for Aspirations in Computing is awarded to young women at the high school level who display leadership ability, academic achievement, and computing and information technology aptitude. Sarah, who intends to double major in mathematics and engineering psychology, is one of only 25 young women in the state of Georgia to receive this award. Sarah is a two-time recipient of this award. The Honors College is pleased to announce the latest addition to their staff, Stacey Rowland, manager of undergraduate research. Stacey’s 20-year career at the University of West Georgia has provided her with invaluable experience and allowed her to serve various departments, faculty and staff throughout the USG institutions. Her most recent role as Student Success Manager for the University System of Georgia Collaborative Programs eCore and eMajor allowed her to serve thousands of students in a heart-felt way. She oversaw the academic and technical support services for students enrolled in the program across nine affiliate institutions and worked alongside the advisors and student success team across the system to help facilitate student success in the program. Four University of West Georgia students’ presentations were accepted for the 2013 National Collegiate Honors Council Conference, taking place this fall. Students Amaan Kazerouni, Ayaan Kazerouni, Sarah Saltiel and Osayame Gaius-Obaseki, will travel with UWG’s Honors College to New Orleans, Louisiana, in November to present their research for this year’s conference themed “Conflict, Transformation, Creolization.” Read more ...
