Four University of West Georgia students received awards at the Georgia Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation annual symposium at Clark Atlanta University. This year’s theme was “Changing the World through Science and Technology.”
Chemistry major Louis Apraku-Boadi received first place for his presentation, “Temperature and Viscosity Control of a Molecular Optical Switch.” His research mentor is Dr. John Hansen, professor of chemistry.
Biology majors Kevin Nguyen, Betkens Senesca, and Joel Page III placed third for their poster presentation, “Identification and molecular characterization of high light-sensitive Chlamydomonas reinhardtii mutant, 10E35.” Their research mentor is Dr. Mautusi Mitra, associate professor of biology.
GA-AL LSAMP, funded by a grant from NSF, is an alliance of nine universities and colleges. UWG hosts 17 LSAMP scholars, who are mentored by 10 COSM faculty.
“The focus of this alliance is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities receiving baccalaureate degree in STEM disciplines, and to prepare them for graduate programs and/or to join the work force in science and technology related jobs,” said Dr. S. Swamy Mruthinti, professor of biology and campus coordinator of GA-AL LSAMP.
