An Alumna Reflects

An Alumna ReflectsI am currently taking an MFA workshop on poetic form. In this course, we have complicated (and sometimes convoluted) discussions on lyric and genre theory. This class contains an assortment of writers, many well beyond me in terms of their poetic achievements. Some with massive amounts of publications. Some with chapbooks. Some fresh from nationwide book tours. I’m taking a course with advanced writers with advanced writing careers, and somehow I’m still able to hold my own in discussion with them. I have UWG to thank for that.

Look, we all know the scholarly aspect of West Georgia is great. I took some solid workshops with some knowledgeable professors, and I’m constantly using the skills they taught me—no lie. Read more ...

Music Events Bring Community Together

Music Events Bring Community TogetherI was born in and grew up near Montgomery, Alabama, which Hank Williams considered his hometown. I was born six-and-a-half years after Hank died, but I became interested in him as a child, in part because of a stack of 78rpm records my dad would sometimes play for my brother and me and in part because of a (not terribly accurate!) movie made about Hank's life in the mid ‘60s. So I am a lifelong fan, but it was only in graduate school at Emory University that I learned that scholars take popular culture seriously. My first book was on public entertainment in Atlanta between 1880 and 1930.

My next project was The Hank Williams Reader, which I co-edited with two other historians (Pat Huber and David Anderson) that Oxford University Press published in 2014. Read more ...

Transition and Transformation

Transition and TransformationMuch of my activity as I transitioned into the interim dean position involved meeting with various stakeholders in and outside the College of Arts and Humanities. I have been delighted to meet and interact with so many thoughtful and enthusiastic supporters of our COAH mission: to support student success and recognize “the transformative power of a liberal arts education.”

One particular event these past few months taught me that transformation at UWG is likewise available to those who serve our students. Members of our COAH staff invited me to lunch with them in the middle of a day long retreat this past November. Read more ...
