Three University of West Georgia athletic teams and their coaches were honored by the City of Carrollton at with a “Proclamation of Congratulations” for their successes this season. The declaration, given Monday, April 11, acknowledged UWG’s men’s basketball team, co-ed cheerleaders, and football team.

“On behalf of all Wolves fans across the nation we are so excited about the academic and athletic success over the past year of our student athletes,” said Matthew Clay, executive director of UWG Athletic Foundation. “The bar has certainly been raised with many individual conference and regional championship titles and recognitions achieved. We have also seen the success of our student-athletes off the field improve with the average GPA of our student athletes higher than the overall student body.”

The presentations were made by city councilmembers Rory Wojcik, Met Lane, and Jim Watters.

“UWG’s athletics has made tremendous strides recently and truly helped place Carrollton on the map,” said Rory. “It was outstanding to be able to be involved throughout the process—broadcasting each home game along the way. It's an exciting time to be a Wolf—the community and the campus coming together to rally behind these winning teams helps make the City of Carrollton a great place to live, learn, work, and play.”

The men’s basketball team won the fourth GSC Title in school history, and the UWG coed cheerleaders won their 12th championship at UCA Nationals this year, making it the 19th overall championship for the program.

“To achieve such excellence, each individual team member must possess an outstanding spirit of dedication, enthusiasm, and willingness to work hard, incorporating into their daily lives the concepts and disciplines which they have been taught and for which they teach to others by example,” read a proclamation.

“With the growing support of our dedicated Wolves Fans, and under the direction of Athletic Director Daryl Dickey, I am confident our alumni and friends should look for continued success of our athletic program for many years to come,” added Matthew.
