The "Voice of UWG Athletics" now has a new title to add to his name, as West Georgia sports information director and play-by-play announcer Mitch Gray was inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Saturday, October 25 at the Atlanta/Marietta Hilton Hotel at Conference Center.
"It is a tremendously humbling honor for me," Mitch said. "I am forever indebted to so many; from Roger Kaiser for adding me to the West Georgia family back in 1982, to Daryl Dickey, and everyone at UWG now. Also, to the many who allow me into their homes, automobiles and businesses every day. I have been part of this community my entire life and it truly is a family. I am truly blessed."
Mitch, who has been the man behind the microphone for more than three decades at West Georgia, was up for induction with more than 20 other candidates. He was announced as a 2014 inductee in a class that includes Willard Arbour. Craig Ashwood, UWG alumni Ryan Cameron, Al Haynes, Rick Mack, John Wetherbee, and Scott Woodside.
"This is such a tremendous honor for Mitch to receive this induction into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame," said UWG Athletic Director Daryl Dickey. "We are proud to have Mitch as a part of the UWG family and congratulate him on this honor."
Mitch joins eight other play-by-play announcers who were already in the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame, including longtime University of Georgia announcer Larry Munson and Atlanta Braves announcers Skip Caray, Pete Van Wieren, and Ernie Johnson. Mitch is now a part of two Hall of Fame walls, as he was inducted into the UWG Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2013.
