West Georgia Moves to 21st in American Football Coaches’ Association Poll

by Matt Cooke

The West Georgia Wolves, fresh off a 26-17 victory over 22nd-ranked West Alabama, moved up three spots in this week's American Football Coaches Association poll, going from 24th last week to 21st this week, as released Monday by the AFCA.

West Georgia Moves to 21st in American Football Coaches’ Association Poll The Wolves moved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2000 season, when West Georgia was ranked in every week of the season and finished the year at 10-2 with a Gulf South Conference championship. This year's UWG squad reached the top-25 last week, entering the poll at 24th, then used a smothering defensive effort in the second half against West Alabama Saturday to take their first GSC victory of the season.

West Georgia is one of three Gulf South Conference teams in this week's rankings, following 5th-ranked North Alabama and 11th-ranked Delta State. There have been five GSC teams to reach the national rankings this season, as Valdosta State and West Alabama were each ranked earlier this season. VSU fell out of the poll last week and UWA this week.

The meat of the Gulf South Conference schedule continues for the Wolves this weekend, as head coach Will Hall and his squad head south to take on the Valdosta State Blazers in the annual Battle for the Peach Basket. Kickoff from Bazemore-Hyder Stadium this Saturday is set for 2 p.m.
