The Responsible Sexuality Panel, also known as “Let’s Talk about Sex,” was held at the Campus Center Ballroom on September 29, 2014. The University of West Georgia’s Responsible Sexuality Committee hosted the event, which marked its 28th edition. This year’s theme, Protecting the Pack, sought to educate students about the importance of sexual protection.
This year’s panel of sexual health professionals included a board certified member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology Megan Grilliot, local infectious disease specialists Dr. Laura Larson, AIDS Healthcare Foundation specialist El’veth Bentley, UWG patient advocate Corey Hindman, UWG psychology professor Dr. Daniel Helminiak and psychology doctoral student Christina Wright. The event’s emcee was Dr. Michael Hester, the dean of the Honor’s College and Trans-Disciplinary Programs.
"I am pleased to collaborate with the Responsible Sexuality Committee by moderating this event,” said Dr. Hester. “Having experts on campus to answer questions our students have is a great way to address concerns in a way that is consistent with our mission of higher education."
The panel spoke to a full house of students and other guests about various sexual health-related issues such as the differences between sexually transmitted diseases and infections and how they are contracted.
“Our students who are sexually active are at risk when they don't use protection or safe practices,” said RxCom committee chair Elizabeth Butts. “Health Services through health education and Wolf Wellness as well as the Responsible Sexuality Committee continue to have programs that educate and encourage safe practices and wise choices when it comes to sexuality.”
RxCom is a UWG organization that aims to educate students about sex, sexuality and sexual health so as to foster smarter and safer sexual behavior. For more information about RxCom, please contact committee chair Elizabeth Butts at ebutts@westga.edu.
