Commemorative bricks line the Victory Garden.
In the past year, the University of West Georgia lost 18 members of its family. Those lives were remembered recently in the annual Memorial Service held in the Alumni Garden.
Family members, faculty and staff, and community members gathered at the service to remember the lives of six students and 12 faculty and staff members.
“The University of West Georgia considers itself to be a family, a wonderful connection among faculty, staff, students, and community,” said Dr. Kyle Marrero, university president. “When we lose a member of our family, we want to pause and celebrate that life.”
The students remembered were Amanda Nicole Foster, Jeffery Alan Jackson, Lillian Evelyn Scott, Jerrell D. Stennett, Joshua Roen Torres, and Ireasha Belle Turner.
Faculty and staff members remembered were Jean D. Bivins, Roy Bushnell Bogue, Dr. Paul Hull Bowdre, Ciarra Cash, Dr. Lucille Garmon, Patricia Rose Gerard, J.W. Kight, Wayne Bivins Kirk, Mary Ann Myers, Marcia A. New, Betty Ann Norman, and Bob Townley.
Family members were invited to speak on behalf of their loved ones as they were presented certificates for commemorative bricks in their memory. The bricks were placed in walkways in the Victory Garden at the Alumni House.
“One small way that the university is committed to remembering our lost family members is by placing a commemorative brick in the garden,” Dr. Marrero said. “Today, we have come together to celebrate many lives.”
