International Night at the University of West Georgia has become something of a tradition for the campus and community. This year, that tradition marked its 30th year as UWG's International Student Club (ISC) hosted the 2015 edition of the annual culture fest.
Themed "Supernationals," this year's event was moved from the traditional venue of Z6 to the Campus Center Ballroom. However, this change did not affect the food, fun, and festivities that International Night has come to be known and loved for.
There was a long queue of eager students and other campus and community members waiting as the doors of the ballroom opened. Attendees enjoyed food from over 15 countries, while a DJ played a variety of music from cultures all over the world. The food reception was immediately followed by the entertainment segment, which was emceed by students Johan Appelros from Sweden and Freya Vulff from Denmark.
From music to dance skits and a fashion show, the audience was kept thoroughly entertained by the many performances that reflected the diverse cultures of UWG’s international student performers. Among the most popular performances were an African "Azonto" dance showcase by Abby Nana and a performance of British artist Ed Sheeran's hit song, "Thinking Out Loud," by Kavan Marambe. Attendees had fun trying to imitate the dance moves from the Azonto Dance Showcase in their seats and waving phone flashlights to “Thinking Out Loud.”
Tradition was also upheld with the event's finale that saw international students, led by ISC president Sahil Gadhavi and entertainment chair Nuzair Nuwais, dance to "Uptown Funk," the hit song by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, to the audience's delight.
"The finale is always fun to watch because you never know what to expect," said Raquel Hanna, a UWG alumnae and former international student from the Bahamas. "The whole event brought back fond memories of my time here."
"This was a wonderful event with good food and great performances," said Gabrielle Chanthaphaeng, a freshman attending her first International Night. "I had heard so much about this, and it lived up to and even exceeded my expectations."
So passed another spectacular International Night and one can scarcely wait till next year to see what the “supernationals” have in store.
