by Briana Crawford

Fifty outstanding junior, senior and graduate students were recognized and inducted into the honor business society of Beta Gamma Sigma. The induction was held at Sunset Hill Country Club by the Richards College of Business of the University of West Georgia.

Business Students Recognized, Inducted into Honor Society Induction into Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest academic honor bestowed by the Richards College of Business. An invitation to join is extended only to the top 10 percent of second-semester juniors, the top 10 percent of seniors, and the top 20 percent of graduate students with majors in business.

Beta Gamma Sigma, founded in 1913, is the only national scholastic honor society in the field of business administration recognized by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International This year the National Beta Gamma Sigma celebrated its 101st anniversary as the University of West Georgia Beta Gamma Sigma chapter celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Each year the University of West Georgia chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma recognizes a deserving student with the Award of Excellence, selected by faculty from the top three Beta Gamma Sigma students with the highest grade point average. Since there were three competitively high GPAs, the deciding factors are their non-academic background, other activities and prior honors. This year the recipient of the Award of Excellence is Anthony Kelley.

Additionally, Jeanine Chambers, executive director at Angel Flight Soars, Inc., a community leader and UWG alumna, was recognized as the 2014 Chapter Honoree of Beta Gamma Sigma for her positive community action, business leadership and support of the college’s educational agenda.

Every year UWG’s chapter recognizes an outstanding faculty member with the Faculty of the Year medallion. This year’s award recipient, voted by the new inductees, was Dr. John Upson, associate professor of management.
