Physics Department Hosts Annual Physics Demo NightWhen one thinks of the term “bed of nails” they either imagine something out of a horror flick or a stunt performed at a magic show. However, no magic was done at the annual Physics Demo Night on November 7, 2014. Sponsored by the Georgia Space Grant Consortium-NASA and the University of West Georgia physics department, the Demo Night show off an array of experiments performed by Physics Professor Dr. Javier Hasbun and Physics Professor Emeritus Dr. Benjamin de Mayo.

“The demos had lots of fire, explosions, and other excitements such as the Frozen Banana (liquid nitrogen), The Bed of Nails, and The Ping Pong Cannon,” said Dr. de Mayo. Read more ...


UWG Physics Professor Awarded NSF Grant

UWG Physics Professor Awarded NSF GrantDr. Nicholas Sterling, assistant professor of physics at the University of West Georgia, has been awarded a three-year, $320,399 grant from the National Science Foundation to collect data on the properties of rubidium and bromine ions.

“The primary goal of my funded research is to study the photoionization, recombination, and collisional excitation properties of rubidium and bromine ions,” explains Dr. Sterling. “I have detected these two elements in the spectra of planetary nebulae (as have other astronomers), but we cannot determine their abundance without the necessary atomic data.” Read more ...

Pre-Pharmacy Student Recipient of Sertoma Outstanding Service AwardAshley Rizzo, a junior pre-pharmacy major at UWG certainly seems to know the meaning of volunteerism and service to others. Ashley was recently named the recipient of the Carrollton Evening Sertoma Outstanding Service Award.

Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Sertoma is a 501(c)(4) not-for-profit international organization dedicated to SERvice TO MAnkind. With over 20,000 members in more than 650 clubs across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, Sertoma Clubs yearly raise more than $20 million for local community service projects. Through these projects, the clubs return those funds to their respective communities. Read more ...
