Three UWG Wolves baseball standouts were named Monday to the 2014 All-Gulf South Conference Baseball Team. Pitcher Cody Skinner, outfielder Shaquille Jackson and first baseman Sumner McWhorter claimed spots on the All-GSC Second Team following a vote by the league's head coaches.
Cody has been UWG's top mound performer for the 2014 season. The native of Ranburne sports a 7-4 record and has an impressive ERA of 2.96. He also earned GSC Pitcher of the Week honors for his March win over nationally ranked non-conference power Florida Tech.
Shaquille, a senior from Thomasville, Alabama, sports an impressive .320 batting average and has been successful on 12-of-16 stolen base attempts this season. Also, his range in center field makes him among the best defensive outfielders in the GSC.
Sumner, a junior from Fitzgerald, played most of his season at first base before recently moving across the diamond to play third following an injury to the regular at that spot. Sumner is batting .319 for the season, but against GSC opponents he ranks among the best in the league with a mark of .373, including nine extra base hits.
Winners of eight of their last nine games, the Wolves are this week preparing for the upcoming Red Zone Sports Bar and Grill GSC Tournament. UWG faces West Florida in Friday's tourney opener at 11 a.m. (EDT) at Young Memorial Field on the UAB campus in Birmingham, Alabama.
