The holidays will be a little brighter for many Carroll County families, and especially their children, thanks to the generosity of the University of West Georgia community. The UWG Staff Advisory Council once again hosted its annual toy drive recently at the Townsend Center. Faculty and staff members who donated gifts were treated to a reception in the Dangle Theatre.
The toy drive is held annually to assist Toys for Tots and the Carroll County Department of Family and Children Services. In addition to donating toys, the UWG family adopted 15 children, aged 9 months to 12 years, from Carroll County DFCS. Items for those children were collected and delivered to DFCS after the reception.
The drive accumulated 12 large bags of donated toys.
“The UWG community never ceases to amaze me with their level of giving,” said Erin Brannon, SAC chair. “Through the generosity of UWG faculty and staff, local children will experience the excitement of opening presents this holiday season.”
According to Matt Careins, Toys for Tots coordinator for Carroll, Heard, and Cleburne Counties, the campus toy drive allows faculty, staff, and students a location to bring their donations.
“The drive that has been ongoing for a number of years always collects a large truck load of toys,” he said. “The toy drive allows the Toys for Tots program to collect toys and keep them local in order to provide Christmas for the approximately 4,000 needy children in our community.”
Toys are still being collected at the Carrollton Publix and other community drop sites until Friday if anyone would still like to make a donation.
