The University of West Georgia recently added a new scholarship for transfer students as an initiative to encourage students to transfer to UWG to further their education.
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest and most prestigious honor society in America. There are currently more than 2.5 million members and over 1,200 chapters located in countries across the world. Phi Theta Kappa aims to identify and inspire the academic success of two-year college students and provide opportunities for growth and development through involvement in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
The scholarship consists of a $4,000 award for the academic year. The recipient must be a member of Phi Theta Kappa who plans to transfer to UWG for the fall semester. The student must be a resident of Georgia and enrolled as a full-time student. A minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA and an associate degree are required. In order to be considered, the student must be fully admitted to UWG. The applicant then should submit a separate application for the scholarship.
UWG is the first and only public university in Georgia to offer the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship. Additionally, the amount offered by UWG is competitive with many of the private institutions in Georgia who do offer Phi Theta Kappa scholarships.
“We had been considering adding a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship, but when we realized that there were not any other public universities in the state of Georgia offering such a scholarship and also that we were able to award a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship competitive with some of the private colleges in Georgia, we felt compelled to reward our incoming Phi Theta Kappa scholars with such a wonderful opportunity,” says Katie Taylor, assistant director of transfers. “We are proud and excited about this new scholarship starting fall 2015.”
