In November, the University of West Georgia hosted the annual International Education Week, which included Caribbean night, study abroad panel and a cultural panel to help expand students’ knowledge on different cultures. To celebrate the week, UWG’s International Services and Programs and the International Student Club scheduled several guest speakers, insightful presentations, a study abroad panel and many cultural boards.
"UWG has so many great opportunities for students to study abroad all over the world -- to enhance field research skills and learn new languages, to develop critical thinking and broader cultural awareness,” says Dr. Maria Doyle, associate director for International Services and Programs. “We've also got wonderful opportunities on campus to learn from and with our international students and international faculty. International Education Week is a chance for us to focus on these assets so that we can foster and learn from them all year long.”
During Caribbean night, students enjoyed free cultural food and entertainment. This night allowed students to experience how different cultures live their daily lives.
Four UWG students were invited to speak on the study abroad panel. The panel included Karley Aszman, majoring in German, Leesi Barinem, majoring in anthropology, Lucas Chance, majoring in English, and Megan Elliot, majoring in nursing. The students shared their experiences in study abroad programs in Germany, Guatemala, Italy and Hungary.
On the last day of Education Week, the International Student Club hosted a cultural panel led by students. The students on the panel represented a variety of cultures including France, India, Azerbaijan, Taiwan, Italy, Indonesia, Jamaica, Nigeria, China and Catalonia.
