The University of West Georgia’s Department of Health Services has successfully renewed a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) for the 11th consecutive year. The goal of the $12,000 grant is to empower students to choose healthy, responsible lifestyles while creating safer and healthier campus environments.
The GOHS administers funding for various programs which address 11 national traffic safety priority areas of impaired driving, police traffic services, speed control, roadway safety, occupant protection/child passenger safety, pedestrian and bicycle safety, motorcycle safety, traffic records, and community traffic safety.
Ron King, lead health educator with Health Services, is very pleased to have the grant renewed once again.
“The GOHS grant helps our Health Education team provide visual incentives for programming,” he said. “More often than not, the incentives spread just as much awareness if not more than lecture programming alone. I am appreciative of the financial assistance this partnership with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety provides.”
This grant will be used for a variety of educational projects. Project Director Jill Hendricks said, “Automobile accidents and substance abuse pose serious health risks for our young adults nationwide. Our Health Educators will collaborate with University Police, the Center for Student Involvement, the Student Conduct office, Athletics, Greek Life, Housing and Residence Life, and others to provide a diverse array of programs and activities designed to educate, raise awareness, enhance student safety, and to promote a campus climate of responsibility and accountability.”
The grant provides funding from October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015. For more information on this and other projects, please visit www.westga.edu/health.
