UWG Turns Earth Day into Earth Week

by Briana Crawford

To celebrate Earth Day, the University of West Georgia’s Sustainability Council will be hosting a full week of planet protecting activities for UWG students and local Carrollton residents from April 12 – 18, 2014. A variety of activities will be held in multiple locations around the community, from UWG campus to Adamson Square and more.

UWG Turns Earth Day into Earth Week It is time to get down and dirty, all in the name of preserving Mother Nature of course. “Sweep the Hooch” is a clean-up that will take place at Chattahoochee Bend State Park on Saturday, April 12. Participants will depart from campus at 8:15 a.m. and arrive at the park at 9 a.m. to help remove trash from the river and surrounding embankment. On Monday April 14, help plant shrubs and trees in the Greenbelt behind Love Valley from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. On Friday, April 18, join in a Campus Garden Planting from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., and help to create a garden with edible plants that will provide food to campus.

After all of this hard work, it will be time to relax with some environmentally conscious movies. Movie Nights will feature “Eating Alabama” on April 14, “Beasts of the Southern Wild” on April 15 and “No Impact Man” on April 17. The films will start at 8:30 p.m.

Earth Week will conclude with the Sustainability Expo on April 24 from 5 - 10 p.m. at the Bradley Street parking lot and the AMP. The event is open to the public and will include live music beginning at 6:30 p.m. and interactive events to help engage and educate community about preserving the planet’s resources.
