For the third year, Emily Teitelbaum, assistant director for student events and programs in the Center for Student Involvement is hosting a series of activities called Summer Events. Emily explains, “Our goals are just for students to have a fun and free way to spend their day during the summer and in between their classes or work for the day.” Summer Events are carefully planned with the student’s interest in mind and with the goal of providing students with a free and easy way to spend their summer days. This is done with the hopes that students will get connected with the university as well as interact with students they otherwise might never have met.
Since Summer Events are student oriented, the past two summers the CSI has had a student intern to help with the planning and implementation of the events. The CSI summer intern, Luke Paul, was assigned the task of coming up with the activities that students would be interested in for Summer Events. “My hope for future summer events is to have more attendees with each event,” Luke says. “I also hope students that did not have the chance to attend one in the past find time to stop by and check it out, and I am really excited about my final event on Adamson Square at the Amp. I have very high hopes that this event will be a great way to end our summer.” CSI will be hosting a band in the Carrollton Square Amphitheatre, on July 17, for students to relax, listen to music and hangout with their friends.
On June 5, CSI hosted the first Summer Event of the year, which was located outside the Campus Center entrance. Senior Student Emily Leissa shares, “Luke did a great job planning everything. It is creative and perfect for a hot day.” Free ice cream of various assortments and free prizes were provided for students to win. Students got to spin a wheel to see what prize they would receive and they were able to get the ice cream simply by showing up. “I think it’s a good thing because it helps students who are taking summer classes relax and destress,” claims student Justin Burn. “And who doesn’t love free prizes?”
CSI plays a key role in providing students with memorable experiences throughout the school year. According to the CSI website, “The CSI facilitates student engagement, leadership and involvement through a variety of programs and services which enhance the overall student experience at UWG.” The CSI office provides students with a way to learn about the many opportunities to get involved on campus. They are also dedicated to planning events that allow students to take a break from their studies and be able to relax. Terri Ducker, a counselor in Counseling and Career Development, states “This office is always looking for a way to serve students.”
