UWG Students Become World Travelers

by Raven Ponder and Maria Doyle

Study abroad is not only a popular option for students learning new languages, but also for those interested in a variety of subjects. This summer, nearly 150 UWG students are heading out to explore the world on study abroad programs in Europe and Central America.

UWG Students Become World Travelers Students will be learning about cardiac care in Hungary, teaching grade school children in Costa Rica, touring businesses in the United Kingdom and creating art in Finland. According to Dr. Jeffrey Zamostny, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures, they are able to see and hear what they’ve studied in the classroom “come to life.” Regardless of the program, students have the opportunity to experience another culture first hand while also earning academic credit and building a resume.

Dr. Jill Drake, director of the College of Education’s program in Costa Rica, believes these programs assist with global understanding. “Immersion in another culture will not only broaden students’ perspectives on the world around them, but also extend their understanding of the sociocultural diversity present in U.S. school settings,” says Dr. Drake.

UWG provides both personal and financial support for students who want to get out into the world. The vast majority of students going abroad with the university this year are receiving some scholarship support from the institution.

Study abroad can also provide valuable practical opportunities. Dr. Chad Davidson, director of the English Department’s program in Spoleto, Italy, agrees. “Study abroad experiences don't just enrich a student's education and life,” Dr. Davidson explains. “They also provide jobs that pay bills. It turns out that ‘the real world’ is also quite large.”
