Two University of West Georgia faculty teams submitted proposals to the statewide 2014 Community Challenge Grant Program for their Innovation Grant competition. Both one-year projects were funded for $25,000 each for the 2014-2015 academic year.
The first project, Accelerated Core Curriculum: Expanding Student Success, demonstrates a multi-disciplinary collaboration between the College of Arts and Humanities, College of Science and Mathematics and the College of Social Sciences, as well as the Center for Teaching and Learning. ACCESS revolves around increasing students’ retention and progression by emphasizing structure scheduling. The project includes a strong research component that will allow the team to study learning outcomes related to the innovative scheduling.

The second project, From STEM to STEAM: Building Meaningful Collaboration between the Sciences and Humanities for Student Success, extends the successful UWise model that enrolls freshman science, technology, engineering and mathematics majors in discipline specific English 1101 sections. In addition to helping STEM freshmen develop analytical skills that are necessary for flourishing scientists, the innovative English curriculum fosters interdisciplinary college writing practices. Through the newly funded project, all incoming STEM majors will participate in the STEM-focused English 1101 courses.
