For many students in health science programs at University of West Georgia, the next port of call for them is professional school, such as medical, pharmacy or nursing school. To help students choose the ideal school, the UWG chapter of the American Medical Student Association and the College of Science and Mathematics pre-health advising hosted a health professions fair featuring various health professions colleges and programs from all over Georgia.
The lobby of the TLC Building was packed with students meeting with admissions representatives from Georgia Regents University’s College of Dental Medicine and Medical School of Georgia, Mercer School of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, Emory University School of Nursing, South University School of Pharmacy, and the Georgia campus of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. AMSA also held a raffle for the chance to win an MCAT textbook. According to Edidong Umoren, a biology major who plans on pursuing a career in pharmacy, the event “was a great opportunity to talk to folks from the schools I’m interested in to get an idea of what exactly I need to do to get in.”
The event continued with presentations tailored to students’ interests. Three separate presentations - medical, dental and pharmacy among others - were offered for students with different focuses. The presentations provided students with professional and academic advice, such as how to choose the ideal concentration and when to take the MCAT, as well as other miscellaneous tips essential to making all the right moves with regards to their post-undergraduate pursuits. Rico Segovia, a member of AMSA, stated that the purpose of the event was to “give students an idea of the (healthcare) fields they might want to pursue and a chance to interact with representatives of various schools and programs to get a look at their options.” It is safe to say that the mission was accomplished.
