Ingram Library Hosts Lincoln Exhibit

by Briana Crawford

Is it possible to bring an American hero back to life? Even though Abraham Lincoln is no longer with us today, the exhibit at the University of West Georgia’s Ingram Library serves to do the 16th U.S. president considerable justice. The exhibit, “Lincoln: A Man of His Time, a Man for All Times,” highlights Lincoln’s struggles and achievements that span from childhood poverty to his trials involving the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Ingram Library Hosts Lincoln ExhibitThe exhibit will be on display now through March 7 and is displayed next to the library’s main service desk. It has gained interest from not only students but the local Carrollton community as well. UWG Library Assistant Richard Cabe discussed his observations of local members stopping in to view Lincoln’s history. “So far, the response has been really positive to have an exhibit such as this during a month which focuses on African American history, as well as the birthdays of Lincoln and Washington. It reminds us and the West Georgia community how important and influential history is to us.”

Students seem to be taking notice as they stop to gaze at the snapshot of a man whose contributions have had such an impact on social and civil rights. Large, square pillars host informational excerpts and quotes illuminating Lincoln’s growth into a man and a leader for his people. These pillars are adjacent to a smaller glass table that displays other documents regarding Lincoln’s history, as well as a book for the exhibit’s visitors to write notes. A small television recounts Lincoln’s endeavors as it cycles through images of battles fought and other historical scenes.

“I like how it’s set up,” says UWG senior Briyanna Releford. “I like the different documents they have on display, the photos and the information that goes along with it.” The exhibit is a convenient display that allows for a quick recap of landmark events. It also gives students a chance to glean new knowledge about Lincoln, showcasing his development and accomplishments for himself and the foundation of our nation.

“I think it’s awesome that they’re actually showing the different steps that Abraham Lincoln had to go through to get to the Emancipation process,” states UWG Junior Brandon Pennamon. “I appreciate it [the exhibit] being here.”
