Dr. Swarna (Bashu) Dutt, Fuller E. Callaway Endowed Chair and Professor of Economics at the University of West Georgia, is the creator and writer of a newly implemented economics text /study guide website named econmentor.com. The website is aimed specifically at helping upper level high school students and college students who are struggling at understanding economics.
Dr. Dutt decided to create econmentor.com in 2005 after having difficulty explaining and clarifying the difference between movement and shift of the demand curve in one of his classes. He began to make a list of 15 multiple choice questions from specific class topics to give to his students to practice, and he received noticeably better test results from doing so. Having worked with website designers and more study guide content composed, Dr. Dutt had econmentor.com fully operable by 2009. Today it has hundreds of topics and thousands of multiple choice questions all online.
The website is for high school and college students and professionals. The study guides provide multiple choice questions which include fundamentals of economics, market structure, factor markets, international economics, consumer behavior and costs, all answered and graded instantly online.
Econmentor.com is being referenced all over the internet by students, consultants, blogs, practitioners and teachers. The website is used by multiple institutions in Georgia where teachers have the link attached to their syllabus, including Central High School in Macon, Georgia, and Windsor Forest High School in Savannah, Georgia. The page is also ranked number one in Google search in more than 50 academic topics in economics.
"I want teachers and students to look at it and try it once,” said Dr. Dutt. “Based on my class feedback, ‘it helps immensely.’”
Dr. Dutt has 27 years of experience teaching at the college level and has taught economics at Wayne State University, Tulane University and now at the University of West Georgia. Dr. Dutt has earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in economics from Patna University in Bihar, India and his master’s and Ph.D in economics from Wayne State Univeristy in Detroit, Michigan.
