Honors Students Collect Nearly 400 Canned Goods for Local Shelter “The Carroll County Emergency Shelter deeply appreciates the Honors College tremendous donation of food,” said Martha Boyce, executive director for Carroll County Emergency Shelter, Inc. “This food will provide a positive impact on our organization’s ability to provide three meals each day of the year for the women and children residing in our safe house for domestic violence victims.”

This is the first year the Honors College implemented the canned foods drive as a part of the community engagement component required for students to graduate with Honors College distinction. The Honors College has provided several community engagement options for students to fulfill they community service requirement this semester.

“Donating food is a great way for our students to get involved and help families in need,” added Stacey Rowland, manager of undergraduate research. “Students participating in the Honors College at UWG engage in a variety of experiences that promote a meaningful undergraduate education and are provided with opportunities outside of the classroom that will help them develop skills and attitudes to become community builders and contribute to the community and environment where they study and learn.”

Students were also involved in the organizing and delivering of the food. The 377 canned foods and packages will specifically benefit the homeless, low-income and victims of domestic violence.

“Our students really came through, and the generosity of our Honors students evidenced in this endeavor is a wonderful expression of caring and collaboration,” said Dr. Michael Hester, dean of the Honors College and Transdisciplinary Programs. “The Honors College is proud to be contributing to the great work being done by the Carroll County Emergency Shelter.”
