by Nikole Gianopoulos

For at least the third year in a row, three of the University of West Georgia’s psychology department alumni are serving on the Board of Directors for the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia.

UWG Alumni Serve on the Board of Directors for the LPCA Mark Butcher, who graduated in 2006 with a Master of Arts, is serving his second term as treasurer. Lisa King Smith, who received a Bachelor of Arts in 1991, a Master of Arts in 2007 and an education specialist degree in 2014, is serving her second term as western district chair. Will Kennedy, who graduated in 2008 with a Master of Arts, is serving his second term as eastern district chair. All three alumni have been actively involved on the LPCA board and have held other positions with LPCA within the last four years.

UWG also hosts an active LPCA student affiliate organization chapter. The SAO gives students a chance to become involved in the counseling profession and learn more about their chosen field with access to free continuing education workshops, volunteer opportunities at the annual convention, mentorships and networking.

In addition, LPCA Georgia is the recipient of this year’s America’s Mental Health Counselors Association 2014 outstanding chapter award.

“Many informative continuing counseling related workshops have been held at UWG over the past two years and will continue to be held at UWG this coming year through my affiliation with the university,” shares Lisa, former SAO president who is also assisting in planning helpful sessions for graduate students, recent graduates and newly licensed associate professional counselors.

At this year’s annual convention, the recipient of LPCA’s counseling student of the year award went to current UWG psychology graduate student Michael Phillips, who is pursuing his master’s degree. Michael is also the incoming president of the UWG chapter of the LPCA SAO.

“The SAO has been a wonderful opportunity for me as a graduate student to get involved with the profession that I inspire to work in one day,” Michael says. “My mentor Dr. Larry Schor was such a vital influence on me to get involved, and now this experience has been one that I truly cherish.”
