The West Georgian Wins Big at Georgia Press Association Conference

The West Georgian, UWG’s student newspaper, won third place for most improved newspaper in the four-year college category at the Georgia College Press Association Conference & Awards Ceremony in February. The GCPA is an organization that is meant to protect, promote, foster and advance the interest of the newspaper industry in Georgia.

The West Georgian Wins Big at Georgia Press Association Conference There was a mix of emotions when Ashley Copeland, editor-in- chief of The West Georgian and a senior at UWG, retired from her position as executive secretary for the GCPA executive board. “This year was a rewarding experience not only for myself as editor-in-chief, but for the staff as a whole,” says Ashley.

This year, Ashley as well as three staff members, two of whom are also graduating seniors, attended the event. “The newspaper has not won an award since 2007,” Ashley adds. “I was honored to have this not only done under my leadership, but for the future of the newspaper overall.”

Another big win for The West Georgian staff was at UWG’s annual Media Day this year. Kathleen Sturgeon, features editor for The West Georgian, won the excellence award in print journalism. Kathleen has worked on the staff since 2012 and is an essential part of the newspaper’s success.

Ashley predicts continued growth for The West Georgian. “This fall will be full of new staff and new beginnings,” she says. “The group that graduates this spring has left a strong legacy for the future staffs to follow.”

Many staff members are expecting to graduate this spring, and The West Georgian is looking for eager students to fill their places. Interested students can apply at www.thewestgeorgian.com.
