by Karley East

The WOLF Internet Radio gained media access to the “Walking Dead Escape,” held at Phillips Arena on May 31, 2014. This was the first time the radio station received access to an event like this zombie obstacle course. The WOLF was given access, along with a select few Clear Channel Communication stations including 94.9 The Bull, Power 96.1 and Radio 105.7.

The student workers at The WOLF received a life experience working along with the other stations. It gave them insight to how things will work and flow when they are out in the real world, along with helping them meet new, future contacts. The WOLF’s Operations Manager Shawn Isaacs states, “The experience at Phillips Arena for ‘The Walking Dead Escape’ was more unique than previous events.” He continues, “Many UWG alum work at Clear Channel and were able to see how far the radio station has grown. Overall it was a moment of past meeting present.”

Shawn discovered the event through Facebook and from liking the page he was able to learn more information about how to become involved. He was able to find the website and whom to contact to gain media access and entry to run the obstacles at the event. The WOLF was also able to secure an interview with the president of Skybound EXP, David Isaacs.

The “Walking Dead Escape” is based on The Walking Dead television series that has become the number one watched show within the demographics of 18-49 year olds. Skybound Entertainment, which opened its doors in 2010, films and produces this popular television series. This event is an obstacle course that has the participants broken up in two groups, the survivors and the walkers. The survivors are “running for their lives” trying to make it through the Evacuation Zone, Herd Highway, Hospital Hell, The Prison Gauntlet and Quarantine until they reach the Decontamination Zone. The Evacuation Route tests each individual’s skills by incorporating many obstacles that will require the participants to climb, crawl and slide over, under and around until they reach the safety zone. Survivors try to make it through the course without being touched by a walker. The walkers are assigned an area to haunt as they try to spread their zombie infection to the survivors.
