UWG Office of Admissions Uses Student Experiences to Inspire High School Students

by Tammy Parrett

When prospective students sign up for a tour of the University of West Georgia, they are signing up for more than just a tour of our beautiful campus, they are signing up for an experience that will shape the way they see our campus and the many opportunities it offers them.

UWG Office of Admissions Uses Student Experiences to Inspire High School StudentsCampus tours are available daily, Monday through Friday, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Students who are interested in transferring West are invited to attend Transfer Tuesdays, which provides students with an opportunity to not only see the campus, but to give them a change of perspective. Students can customize their experience by planning a visit with financial aid or a member of their academic department in an effort to find their path at UWG.

High school juniors are especially encouraged to come out and visit UWG. According to Allyson Bretch, assistant director for campus visits and outreach programs, students who apply to college early are more likely to receive their first choice of the many options that are available to them.

“Applying early allows the student to be able to better ensure first choice options such as orientation, class schedules, scholarships and housing,” shares Allyson. “When students visit early they have time to explore their options, meet with different programs of study, and explore what can make UWG their perfect fit and home institution.”

The summer tour guide team is made up of six UWG students who are dedicated to creating a unique experience for every student and parent they meet.

The summer team members include Ellen Vail, senior mass communications student from Peachtree City; Emily Leissa, senior early childhood education student from Covington; Kyle Broome, senior marketing student from Douglasville; Luke Paul, senior marketing student from Thomaston; Mollie Millholland, senior criminology student from Marietta; and Sarah Burek, who will be beginning the MBA program at UWG in the fall.

“I came on a campus tour when I was a junior and I had this really awesome tour guide. Her name was Chelsea Hood, I’ll never forget her,” says Emily on what inspired her to become a tour guide. “She really made me feel at home, and she is the one who essentially made me ‘go West.’”

These students, who seem more like a family than co-workers, see their job as more than just a way to pay the bills. “These student leaders are key to the success of our on campus recruitment and we are forever grateful and appreciative of their hard work and dedication to UWG,” commends Allyson.
